Bitcoin Dips Below $77K Amid Oil Surge and Rising Yields

Bitcoin falls below $77K as surging oil prices and rising bond yields curb risk appetite, with Ethereum and other altcoins also declining. Geopolitical risks and rate expectations weigh heavily.

Bitcoin slipped below $77,000 on Monday as a surge in oil prices and rising global bond yields weighed on appetite for riskier assets. Market data showed the largest cryptocurrency trading about 1.5% lower at $76,946.60 by 00:54 ET (04:54 GMT), its weakest level since May 1.

Investors scaled back exposure after oil climbed above $110 a barrel amid reports of drone incidents in the United Arab Emirates and stalled diplomatic talks involving Iran. Higher energy costs raised concerns that inflation could remain elevated, pushing up government bond yields.

The benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rose to its highest level since early 2025. Futures markets have cut back expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts and now price in the prospect that rates may stay higher for longer — and in some scenarios, even rise again this year. That shift boosted demand for safer fixed-income assets at the expense of cryptocurrencies and other high-growth instruments.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday warned that “time is ticking” for Iran to reach an agreement with Washington, comments that market participants said added to geopolitical risk and oil-supply worries. Traders also pointed to a cautious tone ahead of major corporate results this week, including Nvidia’s earnings, which could influence broader risk sentiment.

Bitcoin has shown volatility in recent sessions. The coin briefly climbed above $80,000 last week but failed to hold those gains despite continued institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, according to market observers. Analysts say that while institutional interest supports longer-term demand, short-term price swings remain sensitive to macro developments.

Most major altcoins followed Bitcoin lower as investors adopted a risk-off stance. Ethereum fell roughly 3% to about $2,122.12. XRP eased about 1.5% to $1.395. Solana dropped roughly 2%, while Cardano and Polygon each declined about 1.5%. Among meme tokens, Dogecoin slipped near 2.8%.

The moves reflect an environment where geopolitical news and interest-rate expectations are dictating flows across markets. Traders monitoring cryptocurrency positions are now watching oil and Treasury yields for cues on whether the risk-off mood will persist or ease later in the week.
