Meta is making strides in transforming education through virtual reality (VR) technology and the metaverse. The company recently launched the Meta for Education beta program in collaboration with several universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to test new educational applications on Meta Quest headsets. The feedback collected will be used to enhance the VR experiences before officially launching the products. Participating universities include Imperial College London, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Leeds. These institutions will provide valuable insights from their use of VR and Extended Reality (XR) prototypes in academic settings.
The program offers early access to a variety of apps and features that aim to make costly or inaccessible educational experiences more attainable for students. According to Monica Arés, the Executive Director of Imperial IDEA Lab at Imperial College London, this initiative signals a significant shift towards merging digital and physical learning environments. She emphasized the importance of collaboration among educational entities, tech innovators, and developers in building a new educational ecosystem that will benefit both individuals and industries.
In a parallel effort, Meta has partnered with VictoryXR to create digital twin “metaversities” in Europe. These virtual universities allow students and educators to explore, socialize, and attend classes in immersive settings that replicate their real-life campuses. Institutions like the University of Leeds, the University of the Basque Country, and the University of Hannover are involved in this innovation. Leeds has already begun implementing immersive classes focusing on Performance and Theater. Meanwhile, the University of the Basque Country plans to introduce courses in Physiotherapy and Anatomy in February 2025. Similarly, universities in Hannover will start offering immersive classes in the next academic semester.
Meta is also dedicated to equipping educators with the necessary resources and training to leverage these new technologies for enhanced learning experiences. In collaboration with France Immersive Learning, Meta has supported the release of an English language guidebook for educators. This resource provides a comprehensive analysis of available technologies and practical applications in educational settings. Furthermore, the Immersive Learning Academy in the Netherlands, supported by Meta, focuses on producing high-quality educational content that integrates immersive technologies into lifelong learning frameworks and teacher training.
Research suggests VR can significantly improve various learning outcomes, such as comprehension, retention, and engagement. A 2021 PwC study found that VR learners feel 40% more confident in applying acquired knowledge and are 150% more engaged during classes. The XR Association and the International Society for Technology in Education conducted a survey revealing that 77% of educators believe immersive technologies spark curiosity and boost classroom engagement.
With these ambitious initiatives, Meta is poised to reshape educational landscapes in Europe and beyond, encouraging novel forms of learning and collaboration.
