Mistral AI Unveils Free API Tier & Major Updates for Developers and Enterprises

Mistral AI is taking significant strides to democratize cutting-edge artificial intelligence by unveiling several key updates aimed at developers and enterprises. The company announced the rollout of a free API tier, recalibration of pricing for its model lineup, a refreshed version of Mistral Small, and complimentary vision capabilities in its chat platform, le Chat.

Developers now have access to a free tier on La Plateforme, Mistral’s serverless platform that allows seamless experimentation, evaluation, and prototyping using Mistral AI models as API endpoints. This initiative facilitates a smooth transition from prototype to commercial use, complete with zero-retention options and enhanced rate limits. Users have the choice to run these models via cloud partners like Azure, AWS, GCP, or on their own infrastructure.

In pursuit of efficiency and affordability, Mistral AI has slashed prices across its model offerings. For instance, the cost of the Mistral Nemo model has been halved, while the Mistral Small and Codestral models have seen an 80% reduction in price. These changes make frontier models like Mistral Large 2 more cost-effective and accelerate returns on AI investments across different platforms, including those of cloud partners such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI.

The Mistral Small has undergone a major upgrade, resulting in the introduction of the Mistral Small v24.09 model. This enterprise-grade model, boasting 22 billion parameters compared to its predecessor’s capabilities, caters to use cases like translation and sentiment analysis without the need for extensive general-purpose models. The model remains available under the Mistral Research License for non-commercial self-deployment, promising enhanced human alignment and reasoning skills.

Adding a new dimension to its suite, Mistral AI launched Pixtral 12B on le Chat, a vision-capable model that sets itself apart by handling images of any size without compromising text-based performance. Shared under the Apache 2.0 license, this model equips users to deploy visual understanding features within their own environments, thus safeguarding sensitive information and proprietary data.

These latest innovations from Mistral AI speak to the company’s ongoing commitment to making advanced AI accessible to a broader audience, catering to both personal and enterprise needs. With these tools readily available, Mistral AI users are well-equipped to leverage these enhanced capabilities for a wide array of applications.
